Stefano Canto | Sogno di Pietra | Matèria
From 28 February 2026
Matèria presents Sogno di Pietra (Dream of Stone), a solo exhibition by Stefano Canto, opening 28 February 2026 at the gallery’s San Lorenzo space in Rome.
Stefano Canto works at the intersection of sculpture, photography, and site-specific installation, developing a practice deeply attuned to material transformation and the passage of time. His work often begins with stone — the oldest and most stubborn of materials — and traces what happens when stone meets light, water, or the slow forces of geological and human history.
Sogno di Pietra unfolds as a meditation on mineralogy and dreaming: the ways in which stone harbours its own kind of sleep, its own slow interior life. Canto’s sculptures and photographs invite viewers to reconsider matter not as inert but as a carrier of memory, duration, and latent energy.
Matèria has since 2015 dedicated its programme to four exhibitions per year, each conceived in direct dialogue with its artists and often developed in response to the gallery space through site-specific approaches. The gallery focuses on the photographic medium in its broadest sense, exploring its intersections with sculpture, installation, and time-based art.
