Cyril de Commarque, Laura Pugno, Gaia Scaramella, Lucia Veronesi | Materia Madre / Lingua Madre | Erica Ravenna
May 12 – June 28, 2026
Erica Ravenna gallery is pleased to present Materia Madre / Lingua Madre, a group exhibition featuring works by Cyril de Commarque, Laura Pugno, Gaia Scaramella, and Lucia Veronesi, curated by Benedetta Carpi De Resmini. The exhibition opens on May 12, 2026 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the gallery’s spaces in Rome.
Materia Madre / Lingua Madre investigates matter as a primary and generative element — materia come elemento primario e generativo — exploring the deep, often unspoken connection between material substance and the languages through which it is shaped, transformed, and given meaning. The exhibition proposes a dialogue between four artists whose practices converge around the expressive potential of raw materials, the body, and the earth itself.
The four artists bring distinctly different yet complementary approaches to the theme. Cyril de Commarque works at the intersection of sculpture, archaeology, and collective memory, often engaging with primal materials and ancient sites. Laura Pugno explores the tension between the natural and the artificial, creating works where organic matter encounters processes of erasure and revelation. Gaia Scaramella develops a research-based practice rooted in ecology and material transformation, questioning the relationship between human activity and the landscape. Lucia Veronesi investigates the poetics of language and image through works that layer meaning across visual and verbal registers.
Together, their works form a constellation of gestures that honor matter as both origin and mother tongue — a shared language preceding words, embedded in the textures of the world we inhabit.
